Prince George RCMP are investigating a shooting that occurred Friday morning at about 8:30 a.m.in the 500 block of Ottawa Street, in the area commonly known as Moccasin Flats.
“A man was located at that location suffering from a serious gunshot wound," said Cpl. Jennifer Cooper, media relations officer for the Prince George RCMP.. "Multiple police units, including frontline police officers, police dog services, and the investigative support team, immediately flooded the area to search for possible suspects.Emergency Health Services transported the victim to the hospital for treatment of his injuries."
A worker at an adjacent business said a women came out of the warming centre and ran across the lot screaming for help, saying her husband was suffering from a head wound. One of the customers of the business called 9-1-1 and RCMP arrived on the scene 45 seconds later.
"The ambulance was here and they brought a guy out on a stretcher," said the worker. "When the ambulance left there were no sirens."
According to one of the residents of the encampment confirmed the shooting happened in the warming centre, at the west end of the building, which provides food, counseling and shower facilities for Moccasin Flats residents.The man knows the shooting victim but did not identify him.
"He was in my tent last night and he seemed fine, I've known him for about a year," he said.
"He was shot in the face."
The man did not know whether the shooting victim survived the attack.
The Serious Crimes Unit has since taken conduct of this investigation and investigators, including the Forensic Identification Section, will be at the location for a large portion of the day. Police are asking that the general public stay out of the area in order to give investigators space to complete their work.
Police officers are looking to speak with anyone who was in the area between 8 and 8:30 a.m. who may have seen anything suspicious.
