When Anne and Mario Iacovone got married, they not only brought together their lives, but also their love of music and performing.
"Mario and I have been playing together since we got married," Anne said. "That was 15 years ago."
For most of those years, the couple performed simply under their own married name - The Iacovones - but they've opted for a new moniker, plus an expanded lineup, and are now called The Overcomers.
"A lot of our songs are about overcoming obstacles," she said. "They're like little victory songs, so it fit."
The group - Anne on vocals, Mario on guitar as well as bassist Andre Chamberlain and wife Samantha on keyboard - play The Brackendale Art Gallery on Saturday (June 4) at 8 p.m.
The band plays a mix of original songs and eclectic covers that are all steeped in the blues and peppered with alt country, Nashville and modern rock.
"I tend to gravitate towards the blues vocally," she said. "So our covers are more blues - House of the Rising Sun, some Bonnie Raitt - but we also play some new country and some more obscure artists like Gillian Welch, Shawn Colvin and John Hiatt."
The band's original songs, on the other hand, have a bit of a different vibe, she said.
"Our originals have an alternative rock sound as well," Anne said.
Along with supplying vocals, Anne also writes the songs as well.
"I write the lyrics," she said. "And the collaboration happens when Mario starts jamming out chords and I work on the melody, or when jamming with Andre. It really is a team effort."
The band has played at BAG in the past, and Anne said she has fond memories of the venue.
"We've played the art gallery before and it gave us the opportunity to work with talented people like Norm Foote, Jim Byrnes and others," she said. "This is the second show there where we are the hosts and main act. The first time we brought friends from out of town to perform as well, because we wanted to have a bunch of different artists."
But Friday's performance will be all The Overcomers, including the opening act.
"This time the show happened quickly, so we didn't have the opportunity to gather a whole bunch of different artists again," she said. "So instead, Andre has a side project he has with his wife called Step Twelve, and they will open the show and then join us for The Overcomers. His sound is very indie, with lots of looping with keyboard, mandolin and piccolo. It's really great."
If you like The Overcomers' sounds, you'll be able to pick up an album later this summer, according to Anne.
"We're working on an album right now and we expect to have it out by September," she said.
Catch The Overcomers with opening act Step Twelve at the BAG on Saturday (June 4) at 8 p.m.
