Badgerchild returns home

Now living in Vancouver, Squamish duo plays BAG this weekend

Badgerchild vocalist Alex Badger isn't ashamed to be from the Squamish area.

"I'm very proud of where I come from," said the 20-year-old former Brackendale resident and singer/songwriter.

She's so proud of her roots, in fact, that she's made sure she always has a permanent reminder of her hometown 'hood.

"I have a tattoo with Brackendale written on it," she said.

Badger, along with Badgerchild band mate and guitarist Jonathan Aubry - who hails from the Garibaldi Highlands - return to Squamish on Sunday (Oct. 14) at 8 p.m. when they open for The Matinee at the Brackendale Art Gallery (BAG).

Badgerchild plays stripped-down, ethereal and earthy folk/pop - both originals and covers. However, Badger said audience members at Sunday's show will be treated to brand new material not heard anywhere until now.

"We have a lot of songs and covers on our YouTube channel," she said. "But those aren't the songs we are going to be doing. We've been working on an album and we have a bunch of new material - all originals - that we will be playing, although we may throw in a couple of covers, as well."

Badger said the duo plans to bring in a violinist for the show to fill out and enhance the band's already dreamy sound.

"John and I always write for a full band, because that's what we eventually want," she said. "But for now we work with what we have, so the songs are more stripped down and acoustic."

The two only met this past summer, even though they attended the same schools in town.

"We actually went to the same high school, and went on the same field trips, but we never really knew each other," she said. "We met at a house party this summer, coincidentally while John was tattooing one of my designs onto a friend."

Aubry is also responsible for the Brackendale tattoo Badger now sports, as well.

"He was in a band, and our friends knew I sang, so I was invited to sing background vocals for them," she said.

Eventually Badger moved to the front of the stage in the spotlight, but the band soon broke up, leaving just a voice and guitar.

"We found we worked well together song writing," she said. "So, this past January, we moved to Vancouver to work on our music, play gigs and begin recording an EP."

Badgerchild returns to Brackendale on Sunday (Oct. 14) at 8 p.m. as opening act for The Matinee.

Tickets are $20 at Xocolatl or BAG
