Choruses unite for spring concert

The Sound Youth Chorus promises to entertain audience with challenging jazz repertoire

The Sound Youth Chorus and the Sound Children's Chorus' second annual spring concert will feature "a lovely evening of music" and an eclectic repertoire of genres.

"The choirs will perform all the songs we've been working on since January," conductor Kelly Coubrough said of the performance on Saturday, June 4.

"We'll also have the chance to showcase the songs the youth and children's choirs sang together in the Howe Sound Music Festival this year where they competed and were awarded silver in their category."

Coubrough said the time the choirs spent with the adjudicator at the Howe Sound Music Festival also improved their performance and the singers are looking forward to performing their refined folk selections.

The evening will also include a plethora of jazz numbers the Sound Youth Chorus has been rehearsing diligently.

"The youth choir has gotten into some more challenging repertoire this semester, so we're doing a lot more jazz harmonies which they've been having a lot of fun with," she said.

"One piece in particular is really challenging - they've been working really hard on it all year essentially and it is totally a capella, so without music, and it goes into six parts at some points."

The piece, called Chile Con Carne, is all jazz and Coubrough is thrilled that her singers have mastered the complex song.

"It was a challenge and I'm really excited that they'll have the chance to perform it now," she said.

Aside froim the songs the choirs will perform together, the children's choir has between eight and 10 songs and the youth choir has between 10 and 12.

Conducted by Coubrough and Melissa Braun and accompanied by Helena Neudorf, the concert will be held on Saturday, June 4, at 7 p.m. at St. John the Divine Anglican Church.

Tickets are available at the door and suggested donations are $10 for adults and $5 for youth.

Sound Youth Chorus is made up of singers ages 13 to 18 and the Sound Children's Chorus is open to singers ages eight to 12. Anyone interested in joining choir for next year can contact Coubrough at [email protected].
