Now, before you tune out at the mere mention of yet another quirky, dark Tim Burton and Johnny Depp film, might I suggest giving Dark Shadows a watch. Because it's refreshingly new? Heavens no - it's certainly the same old style, but it's at least got a hint of the wit back as they re-make the cultishly adored 1970s soap opera of the same name.
It's 1760 and the Collins family arrives in the New World to make a name for themselves as seafood fishing village kings. And they do until Barnabas (Depp) spurns the advances of a right foul witch (Eva Green). She then forces his lover off a cliff while turning him into a vampire and locking him up for two centuries. Quickly it's 1972 and the story continues with the majority of the time spent as Depp being the fish out of water. Lots of easy gags and quirky characters present themselves in the form of the current Collins family. The second half is pretty much just showing off Burton's visual abilities, which again, are fantastic, but they're nothing we haven't seen many times.
To sum it up in a sentence: Dark Shadows is an updated and more risqu茅 Burtonesque Addams Family.
Speaking of summing up in a sentence, this week's love-it-or-hate-it-destined-for-cult-classic-comedy-infamy release is Iron Sky. And I quote: "Nazis set up a secret base on the dark side of the moon in 1945, where they hide out and plan to return to power in 2018." If that sentence just made you spit milk out of your nose, then you will love it. But be warned - only watch it with others wiping milk off their shirts. Anyone rolling their eyes is not going to enjoy it and you're better off giggling with this one alone.
