The second instalment of the Squamish Academy of Music's (SAM) three-week summer intensive camp, Broadway or Bust, promises to bring to life Disney's The Jungle Book KIDS next week.
The production, featuring young local performers, hits the stage on Friday, Aug. 31, at 7 p.m. at the Eagle Eye Theatre.
In the Disney classic, familiar friends such as the big bear Baloo and the panther Bagheera take audiences through the pages of the Jungle Book with jazzy musical numbers and adventures, outsmarting the devious plans of sneaky Kaa the Snake and the tiger, Shere Khan. Toe-tapping favourites "The Bare Necessities" and "I Wan'na Be Like You" are among the jungle tunes audience members may recognize.
The Broadway or Bust summer camps have taken place in Squamish since 2005. This month's course, offered to students aged six to 12, follows last month's successful performance of the well-attended Fame! Jr.
With the smaller number of students enrolled in the August session, each individual has the opportunity to have a standout role in The Jungle Book, SAM officials said.
"It's more fun with less kids, because you learn the dances and songs faster," said student Larissa McKinney, who appeared as a dancer in the chorus of Fame! Jr.
Nora Linhart returns as director, Amanda Morris as choreographer, and Squamish music student Emma Wong as assistant.
Tickets, which cost $7 for children/students and $15 for adults, can be purchased at SAM on Second Avenue in downtown Squamish or the Adventure Centre.
