Re-booting a franchise is no easy task. It could work beautifully, such as in The Dark Knight, but there's always the fear of crating a gagging pile of Star Wars hooey.
So now we have the director of Lost attempting to revive Star Trek, which has suffered it's share of ho-hum spin offs.
Well, it's my pleasure to tell you it's all good. This re-boot of the Star Trek franchise hits all the right blockbuster notes at all the right times.
The plot isn't bad and there is definitely enough action to help fly over any plot holes along the way. The film starts with James T. Kirk literally being born out of a space battle. From there many of the classic enterprise staff are introduced.
Kirk grows up a hell-bent Idaho farm boy while Spock takes some knocks for being a half blood Vulcan. Both eventually find their path to star fleet academy where they're joined by the classics such as McCoy, Uhura, and then like a beam of goodness, Simon Pegg shows up to play Scotty.
Trekkies might be worried because the plot involves time travel, which is basically an excuse for writers to do whatever the hell they want with the story line. That said, they do a fantastic job.
In the end, what we have here is a terrific summer popcorn movie. Further proof is that with a two hour running time, it felt like 30 minutes like the best blockbusters should.
