OP holds Beach Bum's Ball

Reggae rockers Mindil Beach Markets headline July 17 show

Summer seems to have finally arrived in Squamish, and just in time for another hot reggae-fueled theme night at the Ocean Port Hotel courtesy of Squamishmusiclive.com.

Victoria-based reggae rockers Mindil Beach Markets (MGM) are set to headline "The Beach Bum's Ball" Saturday July 17 at the OP, with local favourites The Jamatonics.

MGM should also be known to reggae and ska-loving locals, as the band played in Squamish for both SERF 2009 and Canada Day 2010.

MGM have also become regulars at the internationally recognized Victoria Ska Festival, which has been running since 1999 and has featured bands such as Fishbone & The Mighty Mighty Bosstones.

"The Beach Bum's Ball is the second music themed monthly concert to take place at the Ocean Port Hotel in collaboration with SquamishMusicLive.com," said Paul Hudson of SquamishMusicLive.com. "Throughout the summer, the bands chosen to perform in Squamish as part of this collaboration will have a reggae feel to keep in-sync with the summer season."

But the live music isn't going to cool off when summer ends.

"Moving into the fall we have booked more funk and world influenced music into the mix," said Hudson. "Regardless of music style, the main focus of these themed concert is to make you want to dance non-stop 'til your legs fall of."

Well, the leg falling off thing - and some business as well, he admitted.

"Part of the mission behind hosting these concerts at the Ocean Port is to get more local residents to visit downtown Squamish regularly for affordable and top-quality live music," he said. "The Ocean Port Hotel venue has wonderful acoustics and the stage is easily viewed from anywhere in the room, even on a packed night - not to mention this historic building has a 99-year-old history."

Catch Mindil Beach Markets and The Jamatonics at the Beach Bum's Ball Saturday July 17 at the Ocean Port Hotel.

Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door.
