A 小蓝视频 Liberal government would break the monopoly IC小蓝视频 has on auto insurance and tackle the age-based discrimination young drivers in 小蓝视频 face when it comes to auto insurance premiums.

Liberal Leader Andrew Wilkinson said Tuesday a Liberal government would open up auto insurance to private competition.

It would keep the no-fault insurance scheme for IC小蓝视频 that the NDP government introduced as an option, should some drivers decide to stick with IC小蓝视频. Otherwise, they would be able to shop around for auto insurance in a kind of dual system similar to what Saskatchewan has.

鈥淔or three years, the NDP and John Horgan have driven up insurance rates for everybody in British Columbia,鈥 Wilkinson said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 especially true for young drivers.

鈥淯nder John Horgan and the NDP, 小蓝视频 drivers pay the highest auto insurance premiums anywhere in Canada. This is a major affordability issue, because it鈥檚 a monopoly. You have no choice. We鈥檙e going to change that.鈥

Over the last three years, IC小蓝视频 premiums have gone up an average of $620 per driver, about 48%, Wilkinson said.

The Liberals would also give younger drivers a break. New and young drivers in 小蓝视频 pay much higher rates than drivers with longer driving records, even if they have never had an accident.

鈥淲e鈥檝e seen rates go from around $1,500 before the NDP took office, to anywhere from $5,000 to $7,000 for a single year of auto insurance for a young person,鈥 Wilkinson said.

Under the Liberal plan, young drivers would get a two-year credit, or four years if they complete driver鈥檚 education.

鈥淭his will result in significantly lower premiums for new drivers with clean records who demonstrate safe driving habits," Wilkinson said.

小蓝视频's New Democrats say the former Liberal government left IC小蓝视频 deeply in debt and a plan is underway to limit legal costs, improve care for accident victims and cut drivers' rates by an average of $400 annually.

The NDP also promised to provide drivers with the money the corporation has saved during the COVID-19 pandemic due to fewer accident claims.

The 小蓝视频 Conservatives, meanwhile, say the two parties are playing "political football" with the auto insurer. Leader Trevor Bolin said the party pledged to eliminate the IC小蓝视频 monopoly in April 2019.

鈥淭hat plan has never changed, and we certainly haven鈥檛 just decided to come up with a campaign promise at the last moment like both the 小蓝视频 Liberals, and NDP, are suddenly doing this week," Bolin said. 鈥淏ritish Columbians should be able to choose from a variety of providers for their insurance needs."
