First Nation designs to adorn Nanaimo's new utility covers

In the coming decade, existing utility covers will be replaced by those with the new designs.

City of Nanaimo utility covers installed within Snuneymuxw territory will soon feature First Nations artwork.

The city collaborated on the project with Ay Lelum, a Coast Salish design company in Nanaimo, with artwork by Joel Good.

In the coming decade, existing utility covers will be replaced by those with the new designs.

Storm covers will be adorned with an image of two supernatural eagles, representing strength, resilience and protection, while sewage utility covers will feature the design of a frog, signifying pure water.

Water utility covers will show an orca, symbolizing power and strength in Hul’q’umi’num’ culture.
