A Port Coquitlam city councillor is getting a special day.
Nov. 20, 2024, is being dedicated as "Darrell Penner Day" in the municipality to recognize his 25 years on council.
Mayor Brad West will read the proclamation at the city’s committee of council meeting today, Nov. 12, 2024; a private event was held Tuesday, Nov. 5 with family, friends and city hall colleagues.
“It was truly humbling,” Penner told the Tri-City News of the tribute. “I don’t like to be the centre of attention, but it was very special.”
First sworn into office on Dec. 6, 1999, Penner is best known for his work on environmental and infrastructure projects.
He co-founded the Hyde Creek Streamkeepers and the hatchery, and advocated for the construction of the Coast Meridian Overpass and the Kingsway Avenue pathway.
As well, he has pushed for strong core services such as snow clearing and helped Port Coquitlam be “a great place to live, work and raise a family.”
Still, “it’s not just me. Collectively, I’ve been a part of some very, very good decisions by council.”
West told the Tri-City News that Penner is receiving the award in honour of “his commitment and the positive difference he has made in the lives of Port Coquitlam residents."
PoCo’s accolade comes after the Union of 小蓝视频 Municipalities (小蓝视频), at its September convention in Vancouver, presented Penner and five other 小蓝视频 civic politicians with Long Service Awards for their quarter-century (or more) service.

Penner said he’ll be seeking re-election in two years in October 2026.
