A man charged with aggravated assault after what police called an unprovoked attack near Vancouver’s Canada Place cruise ship terminal has now appeared before a judge.

A 35-year-old woman was walking near the terminal just before 9 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 13 when a stranger assaulted her.

Massimo Rosario Falvo appeared before Vancouver Provincial Court Judge Reginald Harris on Oct. 16.

Defence lawyer Leo Fumano told Harris the case should return Oct. 22 for a bail hearing.

Fumano said he has yet to receive case disclosure from the Crown.

Falvo remains in custody.

The woman, who is a tourist, was "repeatedly punched and kicked in the face, and sustained multiple injuries that required medical attention," according to a Vancouver Police Department (VPD) release.

Several witnesses called 911 and VPD patrol officers obtained video of the suspect from the crime scene.

“The suspect and victim did not know each other and had no prior interaction before the assault occurred,” Sgt. Steve Addison said.

A suspect was arrested by an officer and police dog at a residential building near East Pender and Columbia streets.
