Four police cruisers were called to deal with an “extremely confrontational” delivery driver caught driving his scooter on the sidewalk in Richmond yesterday.

The Richmond News spotted the aftermath of the commotion shortly after 5 p.m. on Tuesday at No. 3 and Leslie roads, just across from Superstore.

The Fantuan driver donning the turquoise uniform was seen standing by his matching scooter, surrounded by at least four Richmond Mounties and four police cruisers.

Richmond RCMP spokesperson Dennis Hwang confirmed a traffic stop was conducted in the area shortly before 5 p.m.

“The driver was extremely confrontational with the investigating officer, which prompted additional officers to attend the scene,” he said.

The driver received a violation ticket for not having a valid driver’s licence or vehicle insurance, as well as for driving on the sidewalk.

Hwang added that a police officer who arrived to provide language translation “immediately recognized the driver from several Motor Vehicle Act violations in the past.”

The News later spotted the driver again in about an hour, this time making deliveries on foot.

The driver was not the first of his fleet to be caught Tuesday.

According to Hwang, another Fantuan driver was stopped in roughly the same area just 40 minutes before the incident.

The driver was also riding an unlicensed vehicle, and was ticketed for having no insurance and no driver’s licence.

Hwang added that a Richmond RCMP road safety unit officer had reached out to the delivery company in the past “in the hopes of addressing safety concerns with their drivers and fleet.”

“The company has thus far ignored our invitations,” he said.
