A woman charged in a fatal Vancouver stabbing was allegedly involved in an assault the same day but the trial in that case has now been put on hold.
On July 19, 2022, the Vancouver Police Department said Lindsay Scott, 36, had been charged with second-degree murder in the death of Justin Mohrman. The 29-year-old was walking near Smithe and Homer streets around 8:30 a.m. on July 11, 2022, when a stranger stabbed him.
However, when Scott made a court appearance on July 19, an assault charge was listed along with the murder count.
It was that charge that was the subject of an appearance by Scott before Vancouver Provincial Court James Sutherland on Nov. 28.
Defence lawyer John Turner told Sutherland he had been in discussions with Crown prosecutor Brendan McCabe about the two cases.
Turner told Sutherland that the assault trial set to start Nov. 29 should not proceed and should perhaps wait until the murder trial is completed.
“This case is an offshoot of that,” Turner said.
Vancouver Police Department spokesperson Const. Tania Visintin confirmed an assault on a woman in Vancouver took place before the attack that led to Mohrman’s death.
“The alleged assault occurred around 8:15 a.m. which was before the attack on Mr. Mohrman,” Visintin said.
Scott was charged with the assault on July 14 and released the next day. She was barred from being in downtown Vancouver.
She was charged with the murder on July 18, 2022, and has remained in custody ever since.
The case returns to court on Dec. 3 to determine how the matters will proceed.
