Two people are lucky they aren’t more seriously hurt after a collision sent their vehicle crashing into the sea.
Just after noon on Monday, West Vancouver police received a report of a collision on the 3700 block of Marine Drive, just outside of West Bay.
Officers arrived to discover that one vehicle had left the roadway, gone down a rock face and fallen into Burrard Inlet.
Fortunately, both occupants of that car were able to safely remove themselves and were not seriously injured, said Sgt. Chris Bigland, spokesperson for West Vancouver Police Department.
Images of the scene show a black SUV on the roadway with a smashed up front end, and people escaping a half-sunken car in the ocean below. A concrete barrier appears to have been displaced in the crash.
West Vancouver Fire & Rescue led the efforts to recover the vehicle, police said, and people spotted it being pulled from the ocean on Tuesday morning around 9 a.m.
The actual cause of the crash is still under investigation, Bigland said.
WVPD is asking anyone who witnessed the collision or has dashcam footage to come forward.
“We are grateful that no one was seriously hurt,” Bigland said. “And we thank those who stopped to assist with the rescue efforts and the police investigation.”
