Local coffee shop chain closing one of its Vancouver locations after 13 years

The JJ Bean coffee shop location at 146 W Cordova St in the iconic Woodward's redevelopment will close permanently at noon on July 31, 2023.

One of Vancouver's most enduring coffee shop brands is shutting down one of its downtown Vancouver locations after a 13-year-run.

 its last day at the Woodward's Building at 146 W Cordova St will be Monday, July 31 at noon.

"We have really appreciated your support over the years at this location," said JJ Bean's owner John Neate, on behalf of the coffee chain's team, in the business' closing statement. 

The JJ Bean in Vancouver's iconic Woodward's building has been there since the 2010 debut of the . 

The retail space's interior design features beautiful woodwork, including suspended western red cedar beams at the bar area. The use of wood was in part a , which was brought down amidst great fanfare in 2006, according to architect Brady Dunlop of DIALOG, who designed the cafe space. 

Neate did not offer a further explanation about the closure of the JJ Bean on Cordova in his statement, which was posted on the company's website. 

JJ Bean, which began in Vancouver with its stall at the Public Market on Granville Island in 1996, operates several coffee shops in Metro Vancouver. Among the two dozen other JJ Beans are a few in close proximity to the Woodward's Building location, including ones at  (425 Dunsmuir St),  (740 Hamilton St),  (at Dunsmuir & Hornby), and  (1188 Alberni St).
