Cap U offers employment options

New job skills program helps those who have 'hit a wall'

As the Olympics wrap up, so to do the thousands of jobs created in the lead-up and during the Games. The situation may be leaving some wondering "What now?" and Capilano University is offering answers.

Locals are invited to sign up to the Employment Skills Access (ESA) program called Options and open up their opportunities.

"Once and for all you can get over your fear of job interviews and learn to job search like a pro," said ESA project manager Leslie Kozak.

Options is aimed at unemployed individuals who need help landing the right job, and offers free online skills training through Capilano University's Squamish campus Kozak.

"If you've hit a wall looking for work, and keep getting told you don't have the skills to qualify, this is the program for you," said Kozak. "We will give you the tools and support to help you get not just a job, but to move towards a career."

The six-week program shows students how to evaluate present job skills, develop new skills, draft compelling cover letters and fine-tune resumes. Students will also design an action plan to suit their goals and receive individualized support to achieve them.

"When you have the right skills and you do what you are passionate about, money comes to you, doors open for you, you feel useful, and your world is a happy place," said Gail Pearce, a manager of corporate business development.

This is the first time this type of program will be offered in Squamish by the Continuing Education department of Capilano University. Options will be running from March 22 to April 30, Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Squamish Campus, 1150 Carson Place.
