A group of Howe Sound Secondary School (HSSS) students is planning a fundraising dinner next week to help with Rotary International's campaign to eradicate polio.
The Global Awareness Dinner, planned next Friday (April 1) in the school cafeteria and Eagle Eye Theatre, will include a multi-course salmon or chicken dinner prepared by Capilano University chef trainees, music by HSSS students Alex Toews and Jocelyn Pettit, a presentation about polio by Larissa Bergeron and a short film about the Rotary campaign to stop polio in the Third World countries where it is still a threat.
The HSSS Interact Club, which is affiliated with the Rotary Club of Squamish, has organized the dinner as one of its regular community outreach events, club member Teal Imbeau said on Tuesday (March 22). The club has conducted bake sales, and its recent Pennies for Polio campaign raised about $200, she said.
The group, which meets every Tuesday during lunch, includes about 25 students, with "10 or 12 who come every week and are really dedicated to it," Imbeau said. The club also plans to paint the Helping Hands Society homeless shelter this spring, she said.
The evening will also include a fundraising silent auction. Doors open at 6 p.m. and dinner will be served at 6:30. Tickets cost $20 and are available at the school.
