'Star Search' contestants sought

Howe Sound Performing Arts is urging all singers, dancers, musicians and actors to get ready for auditions for the annual Star Search on May 13. The ages are nine to 13 years and youth from 14 to 18 years.

The ages are nine to 13 years and youth from 14 to 18 years. Solos and groups up to five members are welcome. The registration deadline is Friday (March 25) with the audition date on Wednesday, March 30 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. To register, please contact Kristine Miles at [email protected] or www.howesounarts.org.

The Squamish Gardeners will meet on Monday (March 21) at 6:45 p.m. at the Roundhouse at the West Coast Railway Heritage Park. The guest speaker will be Claudia Raaen, author of the book The Sacred Art of Gardening. Non-members are welcome to attend ($5 fee).

Anyone planning to attend the Courage to Grieve Bereavement Support Group for those experiencing loss through the death of a loved one will find the leaders to be caring and compassionate and willing to help you through this difficult time in your life. The group meets each Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. until April 19 in the Squamish Hospice office next to Hilltop House at 38150 Behrner Drive. Next week is Spring Break and all Keep Well Fitness classes at the Seniors Centre will be cancelled. On Monday (March 21), a special Grandparents Day is planned from 9:30 a.m. to noon at the centre from 9:30 a.m. Take the grandkids along for games and other activities.

The Squamish Public Library invites school-age children to participate in a Wii Love Spring Break tournament on Tuesday (March 22) from 1 to 3 p.m. To register, drop by the library or call (604) 892-3110.

The Squamish Food Bank has a bottle drive on Saturday and Sunday (March 26 and 27) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. If you're not home please leave your bottles and cans outside for pickup. Your support is much appreciated by the Food Bank.

A bus trip for seniors to the River Rock Casino is set for Wednesday (March 30) and the cut-off date is Saturday (March 26). On Saturday, April 16, a Tulips of the Valley trip is planned to Seabird Island east of Chilliwack and you will enjoy 40 acres of blooms and up to 20 varieties of tulips. Red Shoes have been chosen to get everyone thinking about the Howe Sound Women's Centre's annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes 2011 (date to be announced). This international event raises awareness about sexual violence and its impact on the whole community. Specific red shoes are available at Fetish for Shoes and $10 from every pair sold will go toward Howe Sound Women's Centre programming.

Take in the Clothing Boutique tomorrow (March 19) from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at St. John's Anglican Church (behind London Drugs).

On Wednesday (March 30), a Managing Osteoarthritis workshop with exercises and Nordic pole walking will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Seniors Centre.

A Spring Break Camp for five- to 12-year-olds will be held at Brennan Park Recreation Centre from Monday to Friday (March 21 to 25) from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. For information on swimming lessons, swim times and activities at the ice arena next week, go to www.squamish.ca.
