Safety alert: Canada-wide recall for deodorant due to possible benzene

Health Canada has issued a recall notification of a brand of aerosol spray deodorant due to the possible presence of benzene. 

The recall concerns the Brut Classic Aerosol Spray Deodorant, which was sold in 154-gram containers and manufactured in Canada, explains a news release issued Monday (Feb. 21).

The federal health department notes that benzene is classified as a human carcinogen and exposure can occur by inhalation, orally, and through the skin. It can result in cancers including leukemia and blood cancer of the bone marrow and blood disorders which can be life-threatening. 

But benzene is "prevalent in the environment and people can be exposed to benzene during everyday life by air (e.g., by inhaling car exhaust, second-hand tobacco smoke and industrial emissions) and by swallowing benzene or by absorbing it through the skin (e.g., through contact with contaminated water)."

The company reported that 8,600 units of the affected product were sold in Canada prior to Feb. 21, 2022. However, there have been no reported incidents or injuries related to using the affected products. 

The model number is BRC27017 - Brut Aero Deo 12/1 154G and the UPC is 00827755070177. Consumers can view the UPC along with the barcode on the product’s label.

What you should do

You should immediately stop using the affected recalled product and discard it appropriately.
