Britannia Beach will be swarming with artists in the act of creating with this weekend's Copper and Fire event at the 小蓝视频 Museum of Mining. On Sunday (Aug. 10), the museum's signature event will showcase "dynamic Earth treasures" through interactive exhibits and art demonstrations such as copper sculpting, pottery, jewelry making, blacksmithing - all activities that require fire or metal to create fine treasures. Squamish jewelry artist Martina Page will demonstrate her constantly honing skills, creating an eclectic repertoire. She works primarily with combining original metal clay, which is 99.9 per cent pure silver, as well as nickel-free Canadian sterling silver. She combines this art with stones and beads made from semi-precious stones and crystal. The Burnaby Heritage Blacksmith Association will be on site for a demonstration of forges. They'll also be explaining the historic place of blacksmithing and its recent renaissance as an art form. Copper wire sculpture Angela Hook of Summerland, 小蓝视频 will show how she's set out to redefine and popularize the form of expression as well as develop technical expertise in a craft that "seemed to have been forgotten." CooksArt Cutters Brian Ross offers sculptures for kitchens or workshops, handcrafted in fine metals from original designs. While studying jewelry techniques for fun, Ross discovered a talent for making things aesthetic as well as practical. "Most production cutters are over simplified to suit their machinery's limitations. I make what I like and then find a way to do it," said Ross. Stained glass artist Judy McQuinn's displays the art form she's mastered for 25 years, inspired by nature and colour to create whimsical to classic pieces, all with attention to detail and intricacy. And this year, several new artistic endeavours have been added, including fire hula performances and new musical artists.Live music will entertain crowds with the Karen Fowlie Band accompanied by Doug and the Slugs guitarist Richard Baker, as well as Squamish's Mario and Anne Iacovone, and Carolyn Grass. The event also features Squamish Nation Dancers, Yukon Dan! Canada's #1 Gold Panner, guided tours of the Britannia Mine and children's art activities, including gold panning. There will be half price admission for the special event that includes a guided tour of the mine.
