'Arts Unplugged' event set

SAC 'coming out party' planned Sept. 8 at Squamish Valley Golf Club

The Squamish Arts Council (SAC) is inviting those with an interest in the arts to a gala celebration of all that makes the arts such a vibrant part of the community.

Scheduled next Saturday (Sept. 8) from 7 to 11 p.m. at the Squamish Valley Golf and Country Club, Arts Unplugged aims to be something of a "coming-out party" for the arts and for SAC's recently elected board, new SAC president Jan Durocher said on Monday (Aug. 27).

The event is to include live music and art with the likes of Michael Tickner, a silent, fundraising auction and visits from dignitaries such as MLA Joan McIntyre, Mayor Rob Kirkham and Joan Richoz, president of Arts 小蓝视频. There will also be a networking exercise titled "60 Contacts in 60 Minutes," where attendees can learn more about other arts initiatives in town and make connections.

The first few people through the door will receive a complimentary glass of wine just to get everyone in a sharing mood, Durocher said.

"It's going to be an amazing event," she said.

All genres of the arts will be showcased, and attendees will be encouraged to share their thoughts about how best to raise the bar for the arts in the Sea to Sky Corridor, Durocher said.

SAC, the umbrella organization for the arts in Squamish, elected a new, 13-member board last month. Durocher, a former freelance commercial artist who has spent the past couple of decades managing arts programs with the likes of the Vancouver Park Board, the Resort Municipality of Whistler, and more recently at Brennan Park, was recently named president.

She said pulling all the various groups together is one of the keys to unlocking the arts' potential in Squamish.

"We're getting very proactive with this because we want to pull all our information together, meet everyone and get together so that we can find out what we've got and how we can best move forward to help all our various groups."

No RSVP is required and admission is by donation. For more information, please email Durocher at [email protected]
