The kids are back to the grind and so are the parents. Combine that with the cooling temperatures and darker evenings and you have the unmistakable signs that video season is upon us.
To celebrate I offer up some film suggestions that touch on the world of the education system.
Lets start with the wee ones. Quality elementary school films are a tough find, but thankfully there is the Jack Black's vehicle School of Rock. Kids learning about rock and roll from a college radio burnout is definitely a good time.
No talk of school films can be complete without mentioning the legendary, and recently deceased John Hughes.
His early films are a must see list of the ultimate high-school stereotype films. In order of back-to-school relevance: Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller's Day Off and Weird Science (college setting). Then there are the fine school age films not necessarily set in schools: Pretty in Pink and 16 Candles.
Now let's give time to the best high-school movie ever -that's right, I dare you to prove me wrong -Heathers.
This is the ultimate dark comedy where the fabulous Winona Ryder and Christian Slater pro-actively solve the challenges of dealing with the popular kids in high school.
The film is amazing for so many reasons, not least of which is it could not be filmed today (post-Columbine).
This satisfies every teen who had a moment where they want to kill everyone and blow up the school.
Let's end on the screwball comedy side with three films that are perfect for what they are: Hamlet 2, High School High and How I Got Into College.
Happy viewing.
