Between Shifts delivers 'A Night of Comedy'

Six one-act comedies aiming to lift some risqu茅 laughter out of the BAG

Between Shifts Theatre plans to sell out more shows with its lineup of six one-act comedies that promise to be light on the risqu茅 and heavy on the laughter.

A sense of humour prevails following the last sell-out production and "A Night of Comedy: Copyright Approved" is bringing together local directors' visions and a talented cast that includes familiar faces and several new actors to Between Shifts Theatre Co.

"I think it's going to be a lot of fun," said Lisa Schaer, director of The Boor by Anton Chekhov. "Rehearsals have been a lot of fun, the actors are really putting a lot of work and effort into it, the directors are working really hard and I think it's just going to be a really fun evening for everybody."

The performances will take place at the Brackendale Art Gallery (BAG), which Schaer considers a perk.

"The BAG is an intimate venue where it feels very one and one, close to the actors and close to the action," she said.

Aside from The Boor, "A Night of Comedy" will include another Chekhov play, The Proposal, directed by Paul Fletcher.

Other one-act plays include Time Flies by David Ives, Harpy by Robert W. Service, Flambe by Olga Humphrey and The Loneliest Vampire in New York by local playwright Alan Forsythe.

Kathy Daniels, award-winning actress, artistic director and founder of Between Shifts Theatre, is sure to ignite admiration on stage in Flambe, in which she plays a struggling cook show host.

"It's about this cook show host who's really lost and her husband's just left her for a doughnut queen who's about 20 years younger than her and she feels pretty bad and starts drinking," Daniels said. "She has a new sous-chef who she proceeds to really abuse, but he thinks of her as his idol.

"But during the course of her abuse, he starts to re-ignite some passion about cooking with her."

Daniels is confident the audience will be tearing up with laughter and promises a carefully chosen, witty and borderline suggestive series of plays.

Between Shifts Theatre is advising PG15 attendance because of suggestive sexual content and language.

Performances will be June 9, 10, 11 and 16, 17 and 18 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15 and available at Billie's Bouquet, the Adventure Centre and the BAG.
