Blood, money, time-sucker

Daybreakers Director: The Spierig Brothers Cast: Ethan Hawke, Willem Dafoe, Sam Neill Rated: 18A Running time: 98 minutes

Story

Wow. I was just exposed to one of the greatest vampire stories ever told. And this actually means something, as I do enjoy vampire-themed entertainment.

This particular vampire yarn literally has it all. Amazing characters, a constant sense of peril, and more than enough "what the hell?!" moments to keep you on the edge of your seat. Not to mention a soundtrack that will keep you to the end of the credits to find out who's songs they are.

The phenomenal vampire story I'm talking about is an HBO series called True Blood.

Daybreakers? Oh, this movie blows. Seriously, there is nothing going for this film, except maybe Willem Dafoe - but even he can only go so for.

Which is unfortunate since the premise isn't bad with the world overrun by vampires the food supply is very low and starving vampires are very grumpy.

Sounds good but it looks like money was limited and most of it was spent on throwing buckets of blood on the screen (which explains the 18a rating).

One thing that is very clear is they did not spend much money on editing or the script. The blood is almost comical and any of the startling moments are of the "hide behind the couch and yell boo" variety.

But is it at least bad in a good way? No.

I suppose the best thing that can be said about this film is that it makes coming across a fantastic vampire story all the more precious. Again, rent the show True Blood and enjoy.
