This Friday and Saturday night, you can follow a cast of gangsters, gamblers and show girls into the streets of New York City with Broadway or Bust's production of two well loved musicals: "Bugsy Malone" and "Guys and Dolls."
"Guys and Dolls" is one of the most successful Broadway musicals ever. The original production won five Tony awards including Best Musical, and features such well-known songs as "Luck Be a Lady", "Guys and Dolls" and "I'll Know."
Set in Damon Runyon's mythical NYC, "Guys and Dolls" junior introduces us to colourful characters who have become legends in the musical theatre canon: Sarah Brown, the upright but uptight "mission doll," Sky Masterson, the slick, high-rolling gambler who woos her on a bet and ends up falling in love; Adelaide, a nightclub performer whose chronic flu is brought on by the fact she's been engaged to the same man for 14 years; and Nathan Detroit, her devoted fianc茅, desperate as always to find a spot for his infamous floating dice game.
"Bugsy Malone" is based on the movie-musical adored by anyone who grew up in the 70s. The popular pint-sized, pin-striped classic features kid gangsters who get to participate in a child's dream come true: a classic fight fought with "splurge blasters" which spew forth silly string. With a catchy, swinging score by the composer of The Muppet Movie, "Bugsy Malone" junior will be enjoyed by people of all ages.
Broadway or Bust Summer Camp is locally-developed and musical theatre intensive. Each summer, the camp presents a show that has been cast, rehearsed and performed all within a three-week time period. Participants are between the ages of six and 18.
This year is Broadway or Bust's eighth season of summer camps and they are proud to boast a return rate of 85 per cent of participants from last year.
"It's amazing having the kids come back year after year because it really helps the program grow," said artistic director, Melissa Braun.
"Each year the skill level of the performers and the quality of the performance continues to go up."
Tickets are available at the door, the Adventure Centre and Squamish Academy of Music. The cost is $15 for adults and $7 for children and students with performances taking place Friday (July 22) and Saturday (July 23) at 7 p.m. at The Eagle Eye Theatre.
