Chinese New Year celebration set

Monday's event at Adventure Centre to include food, dancing

Special Chinese dumplings and desserts, a Lion dance and presentations by Chinese students will be part of Squamish's first-ever Chinese New Year celebration to take place next week.

Relationships between the Sea to Sky Corridor and Asia have been growing stronger every year, event organizer William Roberts said in a statement issued on Tuesday (Jan. 17).

The event, which takes place on Monday (Jan. 23) from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the Adventure Centre, "is one way of demonstrating this growing awareness of and serious commitment to China, India and the Asia Pacific region," Roberts said.

Monday's event, which celebrates the beginning of the Year of the Dragon on the Chinese lunar calendar, is to include presentations by Chinese students and faculty from Quest University, said Roberts, a Squamish resident who is president of the Whistler Centre for Dialogue and the principal of Ren Business Services.

"Ren" is the Chinese word for trying to see things from others' perspectives and then doing one's best for them with that in mind, he said.
