The Squamish Coast Guard Auxiliary (SCGA) is bringing the popular drive-in theatre back to Nexen Beach Thursday (May 14) in the first of a series of drive-ins planned for this summer.
This community event raises funds to support the Squamish Coast Guard Auxiliary Unit. The Squamish Oceanfront parking lot will once again transform in to a drive-in theatre with gates opening at 7 p.m. The movie starts at dusk. Admission is by donation.
"Last year we brought the drive-in to Squamish for the first time and had a great turn out and it was a huge success," said SCGA, Unit Leader, Ron Drewry. "It is a fun event and we invite the whole community to come down to the oceanfront to have dinner and sit back and enjoy the show. Bring your family, bring a date or a car full of friends and cruise on down to the Squamish Oceanfront drive-in theatre."
The Squamish Coast Guard Auxiliary drive-in events are being staged in association with FreshAir Cinema, a White Rock-based "outdoor movie company" that provides the giant screen, projector, FM transmitters and speakers to recreate the "classic" drive-in.
Realizing the future growth of the north end of Howe Sound, the Squamish Emergency Program launched the Squamish Coast Guard Auxiliary in the fall of 2008. Through search and rescue (SAR) response, prevention and safety related activities, the Auxiliary and the Coast Guard work together to achieve their common objective of preventing the loss of life and injury.
The Auxiliary unit has been training for over a year and although the program is partially funded by the Canadian Coast Guard, fundraising is necessary to support activities and the organization.
