Extra-terrestrial gypsy jazz hits Brackendale

Although they're a band from Vancouver, their style and sound is straight from Mars - and it's coming to a theatre near you.

Although they're a band from Vancouver, their style and sound is straight from Mars - and it's coming to a theatre near you.

The Hot Club of Mars has been together for over a dozen years, mixing and matching an eclectic group of instruments and unique rhythms from a talented collection of musicians. Their brand of swingin' gypsy jazz is comprised of everything from Django to traditional Romanian gypsy music to Calypso. Deanna Knight, Michael Dunn, Mark Dowding, Steve Szabo and Charlie Knowles have managed to successfully fuse their collective talents to wow crowds at small funky venues for years.

At the Brackendale Art Gallery, the Hot Club of Mars hits the stage for a one-night-only affair on Saturday, June 26. The BAG crowd will be treated to a steamy session of Maccaferri-style guitar, together with the classic New Orleans sounds of the saxophone, flute, harmonica and steel and rhythm guitars.

"It's quite a show," said BAG main man Thor Froslev. "They're such amazing musicians with such great style. They really get people in the mood with their music."

Tickets for the performance are available for $15 at Mostly Books and the BAG. The show starts at 8 p.m.
