Adrian Glynn discovered early on that the best way to express himself artistically was through his music.
Glynn had a promising career as a character actor but abandoned it to pursue the avenue he felt was the best way to get his message out - music.
"It was a big decision but I just didn't think I could be fulfilled as an artist as an actor," he told The Chief via telephone while on tour in Saskatchewan. "I believe a lot more in my own music than I do acting in sh-y TV shows."
Glynn decided that if he was going to be a struggling artist, he wanted to produce art that he would take pride in.
"It's always hard to do what you want to do but if I'm going to be struggling I want to be making music," he said.
He will be bringing his music, which he describes as "rough folk" to the Howe Sound Inn on March 19.
"I play solo and I tend to write more sad songs," he said. "But at the same time I try to put on a compelling show."
Glynn said he gets his inspiration from a number of different sources but he said that strong, deep lyrics and passion are what he tries to bring to every show.
"A lot of people think of Jack Johnson or something like that when they think of folk music," he said. "But I'm definitely far from that. My music is rough around the edges and I just always try to bring unbridled passion to my shows and my music."
His self-titled debut, which was released in 2007, featured seven songs and his a capella song, titled Ballad of a Christian Man, garnered a considerable amount of buzz among fans and industry professionals alike. The music video, which featured Glynn alone in a darkened church, saw him perform the song live in one single take.
In 2009, Glynn was chosen out of over 450 applicants as one of 小蓝视频's top 20 artists to participate in The Peak Performance Project, a $5 million initiative sponsored by Vancouver's 100.5 The Peak FM.
In addition to the exposure on the radio, Glynn's material has been used for both Canadian and American television programs.
"It's pretty awesome exposure," he said. "There's a lot of stuff out there so to be chosen for a TV show is pretty nice."
Glynn said he's looking forward to getting the chance to perform at the Howe Sound Inn.
"I've only really ever passed through Squamish," he said. "But I went out of my way to go to the Howe Sound Inn a few times. I really like English ale and I loved what they had there."
His sophomore album, entitled Bruise, is due out in the coming months and Glynn said he will be playing material from that album as well as his debut record. He added that he will be selling copies of his older record at the show, along with a book he made when he spent a year in India.
Glynn's performance will kick off at 9:30 p.m. on March 18 and there is no cover charge.
