From Scotland to Syria by oar

Colin and Julie Angus return with another adventure to tell

On Oct. 20 last year, Julie Angus wowed local audiences with her harrowing tale, which she presents in her book Rowboat in a Hurricane.

Exactly a year later, Angus returns with a new tale, a new book and a new documentary, completed with her partner in adventure, husband Colin Angus.

The two bestselling authors combine their strengths in the book and documentary Rowed Trip: From Scotland to Syria by Oar - a travelogue, a search for roots, a romance and a seat-of-your-pants adventure.

The couple provides an account of their journey to Eagle Eye Theatre audiences in a two-hour presentation Oct. 20 starting at 7:30 p.m.

Most newlyweds go in search of pure relaxation for their honeymoons - margaritas, sunbathing, and pink sandy beaches. Not Colin and Julie Angus. Named National Geographic's Adventurers of the Year in 2007, their honeymoon had to be anything but traditional.

The story begins in 2006, while travelling together from Moscow to Vancouver by human power - boat, bike, and foot (including rowing across the Atlantic) - when Julie traced a route of interconnected canals, rivers, and coastlines that led from Colin's parents' homeland of Scotland past her mother's homeland, Germany, and on to her father's, Syria.

"We could row all the way from Scotland to Syria to visit our relatives," she said half-joking.

The result is Rowed Trip, an odyssey from Caithness, Scotland, to the Middle East using rowboats specially designed and constructed for the purpose, each fitted with a bicycle and trailer, allowing it to travel on both water and land.

Their course followed rivers, canals, ancient transportation corridors, oceans and coastlines in an interconnected route through 13 countries.

The resulting documentary is the fourth film in a series of adventure films produced in partnership with Colin or Julie. Earlier films, The Yenisey River Expedition,Amazon from Source to Sea, and Beyond the Horizon, have been viewed worldwide onNational Geographic Television,CTV or in film festivals.

The films have garnered multiple awards from leading festivals including Telluride, Taos, Kendal and Waterwalker.

Advance tickets for the event are $14, $12 for students and seniors, and $16 at the door.
