Get the island vibe

Sunshine, live music, dancing and colorful costumes behind friendly smiles - they're all a big part of the Caribbean, and a big part of this year's Squamish Summer Jam.

Featuring an atmosphere that allows people to escape into the island vibe of the Caribbean, the eighth annual Summer Jam features a bright line-up of fun activities and events to celebrate summer.

"We wanted to bring something different to Squamish for parents and family members who work through the summer and can't get away on holidays," said event organizer Pat Alexander.

Summer Jam is an internationally-flavoured festival, with the Caribbean serving as the central theme. Hosted by Vertical Reality Sports Store at the south end of Second Avenue, a live steel band will be entertaining crowds with Caribbean rhythms from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday (Aug.22) while they dance and sing and celebrate summer in the sunshine.

Party-goers are encouraged to dress in bright, colourful attire and to be ready to get down. A limbo contest, spot dancing and hula-hooping showcase contest are three of the main activities, with prizes and contest giveaways offered.

"The atmosphere is warm and friendly, and Caribbean music is so international that everybody gets into it from all walks of life," said Alexander. "Come on down and jump with us."
