Last hurrah bids farewell to Games

Spirit Centre weekend marks Wild At Art finale with live local entertainment

To bid farewell to the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games and mark the Wild At Art Spirit of Squamish festival finale, the Brennan Park Squamish Spirit Centre will host a flurry of cultural Olympiad activities this Saturday and Sunday (Feb. 27 and 28).

Olympic program co-ordinator Tamsyn Morote said the weekend activities should not be missed by anyone.

"We've had a really good crowd. It's a really fun, family friendly time to be here and everyone is welcome."

Starting at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday (Feb. 27) the Elks will be hosting a pancake breakfast in the auditorium until 11:30 a.m.

Starting at 10 a.m. and running until 7 p.m., the public will be able to add their own creative flair to an Olympic Sea to Sky inspired mural being painted by a handful of local artists at the Spirit Centre.

"That will actually go up in Brennan Park and that will be something that stays here and our reminder that we were part of the Olympics," Morote said.

From 10:30 to 11 a.m. kids of all ages are invited to attend a story time reading by Trudie Neubert from the Squamish Public Library in the mezzanine of the recreation centre.

A Canadian themed public skate will run in the arena from 10:40 a.m. until 1:10 p.m., and live entertainment will start with singer-songwriter Paul Coulter-Brown at 11 a.m.

Also kicking off at 11 a.m. and running until 7 p.m., the Spirit Centre auditorium will house a farmers market, while kids of all ages will be able to enjoy a family fun zone filled with face painting, balloon twisting and bouncy castles from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

As a part of the Wild At Art Spirit of Squamish Festival the live entertainment continues at 12:15 p.m. with the Squamish Belly Dancers scheduled to give an interactive demonstration, followed by The Overcomers performing at 1 p.m.

Squamish Bhangra will give an interactive dance demonstration at 2:15 p.m. followed by Radio Karma performing at the Spirit Centre at 3 p.m.

Olympic Games mascots Miga, Quatchi and Sumi, are scheduled to stop by the Spirit Centre between 4 and 4:30 p.m. to pose for pictures with fans.

A big screen television will air the Olympic Games figure skating exhibition gala at 4:30 p.m. and the men's bronze medal hockey game at 7 p.m.

Morote said the big screen TV has drawn visitors from around the globe into the Spirit Centre to catch some Games coverage.

"We've had German visitors coming in with their Canada flags and it's really great."

Food and beverages will be available at the Spirit Centre throughout the day.

Starting at 12:15 p.m. on Sunday (Feb. 28) the big screen TV will show the men's gold medal hockey game with concession by the Squamish Scout Group. Starting at 6 p.m. in the Closing Ceremonies of the 2010 Olympic Games will be aired on the big screen.
