'Looper' a time-travel classic

It's the most wonderful time of the year. So yes, this year sucked for Squamish cinema mostly because of the death of our multiplex.

So yes, this year sucked for Squamish cinema mostly because of the death of our multiplex. However, this is an awesome time of the year for movie viewing because it's when the best movies of the year seem to either come out on video or in the theatre.

While people with theatres enjoy Django Unchained and The Hobbit, we still have some quality gold coming to the shelves like Looper, which made many critics' best-of lists and with good reason.

The year is 2044. In 30 years, time travel will have been invented and immediately made illegal. It's only used by gangsters who use it to dispose of bodies. Joseph Gordon-Levitt stars as a looper/killer who is told where a person will appear out of time for him to kill and dispose of, no questions asked, in exchange for lots of silver. A pretty good job in 2044's economy.

Trouble starts when the loopers realize more and more of them are having to kill their future selves, known as closing the loop. Bruce Willis enters the game as Levitt's future self and goes about trying to change the future/past.

As usual, time travel movies always have plot holes. These holes and the people who like to poke them are addressed quickly in a scene where Bruce basically states forget about understanding time travel it's all fuzzy. Concentrate on the matter at hand. In the end, it's a great film with all characters dealing with addiction, love, moral choices and gunplay at every turn. A breakout star shout out to Pierce Gagnon, who gives one of the most intense child performances in recent memory.

After viewing, prepare for plot-hole and what-would-you-do-if-you-could-time-travel conversations. Best one I've heard so far: I want to go back in time to deal with (insert political figure you dislike here). Not to make sure he wasn't born, but to raise him right.
