A Very Harold and Kumar 3D Christmas
Director: Todd Strauss-Schulson
Cast: Kal Penn, John Cho, Neil Patrick Harris
Rated: 18 A
Running time: 90 minutes
When a film franchise hits its third movie, you pretty much know what to expect. It might be bad, it might be good, but the flavour should still be there. Well, the millions of over-the-top stoner comedy fans will be glad to know that Harold and Kumar are back in fine form with their deliciously smoky flavour.
The film starts with Kumar (the funniest part is he is played by real-life White House staffer Kal Penn) continuing his full-tilt stoner lifestyle, avoiding adulthood, while Harold is embracing his new married life. The two are brought together when a mysterious present arrives on Kumar's door. From there it is a quest to find the perfect Christmas tree and those familiar with the franchise know how successful those quests are.
Back for the third time is the star cameo master Neil Patrick Harris playing himself - kind of. He makes fun of his persona so well that it is always a wonderful thing to watch. I also like the daddy-daughter day guy who pretty much lives the secret nightmare of every mother who leaves her child for the first time with her husband.
Oh, I must also say that I saw this film in digital 3D (yes, it was my first) and I can only say - awesome! They used the technology to such comedic excess that it was absolutely amazing. Yes, it would still be funny in 2D but if you can, it's worth the gas and glasses cash for the 3D. When it comes to Christmas films it simply does not get better than an airborne baby Jesus coming 30 feet out of the screen to give you a wink. Merry Christmas indeed.
