Mind bender

Sherpas Cinema's latest film awash with skiing delights

The trailer starts with a weather-beaten old man spinning a prayer wheel.

The thick skin on his face is etched with stories, like a rock that's been chipped and worn from a long journey down a windy river. Then there's a shot of an angular peak, frosted with ribs of whipped-cream snow.

In 2011, the Whistler-based production house Sherpa Cinema delighted audiences with its award-winning documentary All.I.Can. Shot on six continents over two years, the exploratory essay linked the challenges of big-mountain skiing with those surrounding global climate change. The flick took home the 2012 Powder Awards Movie of the Year.

This year, the makers of the film Into the Mind looked internally, examining experiences passed between mentors and peers to paint a philosophical portrait of humankind.

Shooting took them around the world from Whistler to Nepal and Bolivia.

The film is a story of rising to the ultimate challenge, the company stated in a press release. Having the courage to risk fatal exposure and the perseverance demanded on the quest for achievement.

After selling out at its debut showing in Whistler, the group is bringing its latest film to Squamish. The film features a talented cast of Sea to Sky skiers including Squamish's Rory Bushfield and DCP.

It's about time the film landed in Squamish, producers stated.

Into the Mind will play on Friday (Nov. 1) at Quest University in the MPR room below the cafeteria. Tickets are $15 and are available in advance at Urban Alpine or online at www.doglotion.com/intothemind. They can also be bought at the door; however, organizers warn that Sherpas Cinema's shows have a history of selling out.
