More than just star power

Despicable Me Director: Pierre Coffin, Chris Renaud Cast: Steve Carell, Jason Segel, Russell Brand (Animated) Rated: PG

This is an odd world. A world where a fantastic animated film, in this case Despicable Me, focuses its entire advertising efforts on one name. But it's not the name of the writers, the creator, or even the director; no it's the name of one of the voices. In this case every ad lets you know one thing, this movie has the voice of Steve Carell.

Stupid? Yes, since it is somewhat unrecognizable, but more so it's stupid because it's completely irrelevant to everything else in the film, which is very good.

The plot is a well-worn yarn with an evil super villain waiting for his next big break.

It is here that he starts a feud with another, younger supervillan and wouldn't you know it, villainy ensues.

While all this evil is ensuing though, three adorable little girl orphans enter the mix, and if hundreds of animated movies have taught us anything, it's that big-eyed little orphan girls can melt any villain's heart.

As cheesy as that sounds it all works well due to the main interesting character, not to mention his minions who are hundreds of funny little yellow punching bags of various abilities.

And as much as this looks like a Pixar movie, sounds like a Pixar movie and even smells like a Pixar movie it's actually the first animated feature for Illumination Entertainment.

Let's hope it's the fist of many and we can be excited to think how great the next one will be, especially if they focus more on the things that count and less on the B grade celebrity voice they landed.
