It's with mixed feelings I welcome the popularization of the musical.
I've always been a big fan of musicals but like any genre gaining popularity (thank you Glee), there is a risk of bad productions taking advantage of the new trend.
Thankfully Score! Hockey Musical is a good product, and to those of you just hopping on the musical bandwagon I would like to say welcome.
Here we have the story about a home-schooled kid who plays his first official hockey game when he's 17 and becomes a superstar.
This soon clashes with his pacifist beliefs, his eccentric parents and the cute girl next door.
I'm actually slightly amazed that this movie exists without a cent of marketing - seriously, besides the people who saw this at open at the Toronto Film Fest, who even knows this movie existed?
That's another way this is definitely a Canadian production, that and the appearance of Walter Gretzky, Nelly Furtado, Hawksley Workman and George Stroumboulopoulos.
Surprisingly for a musical, they didn't emasculate hockey too bad. That's what I thought until the final scene when dump trucks of silly got puked onto the screen. It was both horrifying and wonderful.
In a nutshell, fans of Glee will no doubt love this film. Fans of hockey (who didn't read the full title) will wonder just what the hell they've got themselves into.
Finally, if you are fan of musicals it is my responsibility to demand you go to your computer and watch the best musical of this decade for free. Goggle Dr.Horrible's Sing-A-Long Blog - enjoy my friends.
