A slow start doesn't have to mean a quiet one.
Six musicians showed up to play and listen at the second Sunday Night Jam at the Brackendale Art Gallery, and the lively music raised the rafters.
There's twice as many musicians here as there was at last month's jam, said Carolyn Grass, who along with two friends came up with the idea of establishing an organized, consistent session where musicians could get together to play and learn.
Grass is optimistic more musicians will come out as people find out about the sessions. "We're just getting off the ground," she said.
Grass, Paul Borchert and Paul Coulter-Brown decided to form a jam session after the Copper and Fire event in Britannia Beach this past August.
"There's been lots of occasions where musicians get together and say they should do it more often," she said. "We thought it would be a good idea."
They chose to have the sessions at the Brackendale Art Gallery because of the atmosphere, she said.The art gallery owner, Thor Froslev, supports the jam sessions.
"You should always support local groups, especially a group of musicians who need a place to play, and I'm here," he said.
"We're hoping as time goes on there will be more musicians," Grass said.
"There's a lot of musicians, but they don't get together," said Juan De Marias, who plays flamenco-inspired pieces on his guitar. "It's a great idea."
The Sunday Night Jam will be held the first Sunday of every month starting at 7:30 p.m. at the BAG.
