Get Him to the Greek
Director: Nicholas Stoller
Cast: Russell Brand, Jonah Hill, Sean Combs
Rated: 18a
Running time: 109 minutes
Vulgar comedy. Over the years this term has certainly morphed at an exponential rate. For every movie made the goal has been to go just a little bit farther while still being funny and not just a stupid waste of time.
This movie skirts in and out of that gray area for pretty much 90 of the 109 minutes running time. Right off the bat though you should know that if you are not a fan of vulgar comedy, stay the hell away from this thing. Far, far away.
What we have here is a spin-off. Remember the rock star Aldous Snow from Forgetting Sarah Marshall? Russell Brand is back playing the same over-the-top entertainer. The other side of this bromance film is Judd Apataw's favorite fat comic, Jonah Hill. Funny enough Jonah is not playing the role he played in Sarah Marshall but rather a slightly less-than-foul-mouthed LA record company underling. His task is simple: Get a once-great rock star from London to LA to perform a reunion concert at the Greek Theatre.
Of course, what follows is a brotherly love road movie where both characters get to learn a lot about each other and about themselves. When that's not happening it's pretty much just one vulgar situation joke after another.
This film's standout role is actually Sean 'Diddy' Combs as the insane record company owner. Besides that, this movie will be in the discount bin at the video store pretty quick - see it if you must.
Correction: Last week I incorrectly said Liz 'plastic surgery disaster' Taylor was in Sex and the City when it was actually Liza 'plastic surgery disaster' Minnelli. I do not regret the error as they have both been so horrifically altered it was an honest mistake.
