'Naomi's Road' production set

Opera performance focuses on internment of Japanese-Canadians

The opera is coming to Squamish this weekend.

The Vancouver Opera in Schools program is performing Naomi's Road, a children's opera about one child's experience during the Japanese-Canadian internment during the Second World War, on Sunday (April 28) at the Eagle Eye Theatre.

Naomi's Road, based on a novel of the same name by Joy Kogawa, is a "sensitive, visually evocative production filled with emotion, humour and soaring melodies," organizers said in a statement.

The production, part of the One Book One Community Initiative, a community-wide Squamish book club, is coming to Squamish at the behest of the Squamish Literacy Committee. The event includes an activity fair to learn more about the internment, Japanese language, culture and food, as well as local literacy initiatives, organizers said.

The activity fair begins at 1:15 p.m. and the production begins at 2 p.m. Admission is free. For more information, visit vancouveropera.ca
