OK, fine I'll go see How to Train Your Dragon. Might as well since every kid in North America went to see it allowing this film to climb to the number box office one spot not once, or twice, but three times.
Although I first attributed this to the absolute hokum that has been released this month, after viewing, I'm happy to report it's number one because it's really good.
This is the story of a Viking village where dragons are evil brutes that kill and destroy everything in their path, hence the battle that has ensued for generations.
Viking kill dragon and dragon kill Viking. That's the way it always was and that's the way it will always be until. Enter the star of the show (Jay Baruchel) who is a little different in that when given the opportunity to kill a dragon he decides instead to befriend it.
The animation is quite good but more importantly while the voices are celebrities (ban celebrity voices), they aren't distracting from the great writing. In a nutshell we have a great mix of the classic "boy and his dog" story mixed with the equally classic "just because we've been killing each other for generations doesn't mean we should keep doing that" story.
A moral that not everyone wants to hear so thankfully it's woven very nicely in spectacular action and storytelling.
If you haven't seen it already - this one is definitely worth your family movie going dollar.
