Renowned local photographer Paul Bride is opening his gallery to another artist for the first time this Friday (Feb 4).
Longtime friend and sometimes colleague Shawn Morris will display his photography and art collection at Bride's gallery for two weeks with an opening party Friday to welcome his work to Squamish.
"I'm excited about that and really stoked that Paul's giving me the opportunity to do this," Morris said. "Especially with Paul being such a recognized person in the community and then a photographer and artist as well.
"It's nice to bring in a crowd of people that otherwise probably wouldn't know about it or come if it was just at a gallery that I didn't know the people."
Bride's and Morris's friendship goes back many years and their choice of shots are somewhat similar. Like Bride, Morris has a knack for off-the-beaten-path travel photography and capturing action-adventure images.
Morris will be displaying 17 different 24-by-36-inch prints on canvas, focusing on four themes - travel, landscape, nature and outdoor adventure.
"It's a combination of photographs, some paintings that are essentially prints, and some graphic and manipulated photographs," he said.
Most of Morris's photos are taken in South and Central America, Hawaii and the Cook Islands, and in the backcountry of 小蓝视频
"Travel wise, it's a good representation of places and people off the beaten track -stuff you wouldn't see as a regular tourist or on a two-week beach holiday," he said.
For the action-adventure shots, Morris chose the images he knows reflect some of Squamish's passions - skiing, kayaking, surfing and more.
Morris recently ventured into the more artistic side of the photography world and admits that it seemed strange at first.
"Even though I'm using my own photographs and manipulating them, at first it kind of felt like cheating," he said. "But now I'm recognizing that it's a whole different ballgame and I'm trying to capitalize on other avenues that are paralleled with photography but still utilize my skill set.
"Having a slide show and editing photos is one thing, but then creating art, especially as a photographer, is an interesting concept."
The public is invited to celebrate with Morris and view his collection at a special open house gala at the Paul Bride Gallery on Friday (Feb. 4) from 6 to 10:30 p.m.
"The opening party will be awesome - there'll be wine, hors d'oeuvres, appies and a lot of good people," Morris said.
His collection will be on display at the gallery, 37864 Third Ave., from Feb. 4 to 18. The exhibit will be open daily from 2 to 9 p.m. or by appointment.
