Piggybanks will tremble

Diary of a Wimpy Kid Director: Thor Freudenthal Cast: Zachary Gordon, Robert Capron, Devon Bostick Rated: PG Running time: 92 minutes

I'm so sorry. I apologize because I'm the guy who hasn't returned Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Roderick Rules to the Squamish Public Library. I swear I'm still looking everywhere but I simply can't find the darn thing.

This is significant for two reasons. One, because whenever a movie is made from a book, sales and readership of said book explodes and that is no different with the latest pre-teen phenomenon: Jeff Kinney's Diary of a Wimpy Kid.

The second reason this is unfortunate is because the books are really good. They are a fantastic mix of quick humorous writing and illustrations in the classic diary form.

Here we have a live action film based on the books and it certainly keeps the cartoony feel and the quick pace. Zachary Gordon plays the wimpy kid named Greg.

He's the second smallest kid starting middle school who is completely convinced that he will be the most popular kid in the school -he just has to find his niche. Mostly it means he is mean to his best friend Rowly who is the fat nerd.

This movie is not subtle, Rowly is completely oblivious to everything, and this allows him to simply be himself to the extent of publicly dancing with his mom to the Beastie Boys Intergalactic. Seriously, it is something to be seen.

This movie is aimed directly at the piggybanks of pre-teen boys, and I predict they will be crushed to see this film. All others will be entertained and those annoyed will not be for long since the running time is barely an hour and a half. Enjoy.

Postscript: Dear Diary, one day after writing an apology to the whole town for losing a library book, after four months of searching, the book appeared. This is funny but I'm not laughing.
