This next award is given for the best use of punctuation in a film title. And the Oscar goes to the exclamation point at the end of Informant! (cue clapping and applause).
Yes the punctuation is bold and quirky, but gosh-darn-it so is this wonderful film.
The words "based on the true story" are actually much funnier after you see the film because it is very hard to think that this man actually exists.
To explain, this film is based on Kurt Eichenwald's book The Informant. Basically it's Matt Damon playing the biochemist Mark Whitacre, who helps the FBI expose a price fixing scandal in the agriculture business. Scott Bakula is always nice to see and here he's the pleasant FBI agent who is lead to unravel the whole sorted tale with Whitacre as a mole.
There are two standout things about this film. The instrumental soundtrack is definitely clever, but particularly great was the use of voice over dialogue in key scenes to hear what's going on in Whitacre's head.
More often than not, it's ridiculous trivia and inane yet funny details that just makes the man scream "shucks." The only distracting thing is Matt's great performance, which is identical to a character Bruce McCullough made famous with the Kids in the Hall. Parts of Informant! definitely had a Kids in the Hall feel and that is certainly a good thing.
In the end what we have here is a great story and definitely entertainment worth your hard earned dollar.
