Great, top notch, jolly good, fantastic... I've been struggling writing this review of one of the funniest adult animated shows I've seen in a while, mostly because I'm not sure what to say other than, "It's bloody brilliant."
The Show: Archer. The awesomeness: very high indeed.
Archer is a show about a spy agency called ISIS and the flat-out crazy people who work there.
The main character is Archer, who is the world's greatest super spy. He's also an irredeemable a--hole, raging alcoholic, and very funny.
A heartless drunk who also happens to be Archers mother runs the agency itself. This provides more than enough dysfunctional mommy issue plots for continual comedic fodder.
Rounding out the cast of regulars, there's the lab guy/genetic Hitler clone, Cheryl the drug-munching billionaire secretary, Lana the continually mocked voice of reason, and Pam (my favourite) as an incompetent HR person.
At its core this show is about constant chaos as the cast is continually either running away from fires, starting fires, or often, doing both at the same time. The voice cast is remarkable, and they are all individually recorded. This allows for lots of great editing magic, where pieces of the show are put together for ultimate control and comedic punch.
While there are some who may critique the show's occasional misses, the hits far outweigh them making for a truly awesome average.
Archer has been renewed for a fifth season on FX and the first three seasons are currently streaming on Netflix... Enjoy.
