Well, this is exciting. I have not only news of a great new show but also a great new network. Last year was the first time Sundance decided to get into the business of making its own shows and it did so in such a fashion worthy of AMC, HBO, FX, etc. And easily one of their biggest hits this year was Rectify.
Over a scant six episodes, Rectify tells the story of Daniel Holden (Aden Young), a man sent to death row when he was just 18. Twenty years later, he is temporarily released on new DNA evidence, so he goes back to his small hometown in Georgia and that's a lot to take in. The episodes cover his first six days out and while some may comment on the show's pacing, I found it perfect. There is plenty of introspection as he tries to come to grips with what happened.
The acting and directing are top-notch and the writing is incredible. Knowing very little of Daniel, it's impossible not to be empathetic while seeing everything through his eyes as he walks around like an alien looking at things for the first time.
And it's not just Daniel who is coming to terms with events, but the entire community is forced to dig up some dark times that most would prefer to forget.
Rectify is definitely worthy of the critical praise and your time. And double bonus awesome, production has just started on season two so it's a great time to start a new show enjoy.
