She certainly won't be mistaken for Taylor Swift, but Vancouver resident Shiloh Lindsey has been busy carving out her own unique niche on the country music scene since her debut album in 2004.
Hailed as "The Whiskey Sipping Darling of the Vancouver Country Scene," Lindsey will showcase her own brand of alt-country music at the Howe Sound Inn on Saturday (March 5).
"I've been referred to as alt-country and outlaw country," she said. "Someone once wrote about my style as being early Sheryl Crow possessed with the spirits of Patsy Cline and Johnny Cash. People coming to the show can expect a heartfelt performance with some grit and boot stomp."
This past summer she released her second album, entitled Western Violence and Brief Sensuality, and she said she's looking forward to performing at the Howe Sound Inn.
"I love Howe Sound," she said. "I'm a big beer nerd so playing music and drinking finely crafted ale in a place with comfy hotel rooms above the bar is pretty much a place resembling heaven to me."
Western Violence and Brief Sensuality, Lindsey's sophomore album, is a concept album with songs ranging from murder ballads and tales of the drunken disorderly to songs about cheating lovers. The album features several talented Vancouver musicians playing behind Lindsey's haunting yet powerful voice.
"The good times and the bad times are what have inspired me musically," she said.
According to the biography on her website, Shiloh's music is for somewhere between that after-hours moment in the dimly lit bar when Johnny Cash comes on the jukebox for the last time, and that instant when the sun first starts to turn the sky from darkness to dawn.
It's been a busy several months for Lindsey since the release of her album back in June. She toured throughout British Columbia and Alberta and the March 5 show in Squamish is the start of what looks to be another busy few months. Lindsey has two other shows planned for Vancouver in March and then is planning to embark on a tour to eastern Canada. Dates and locations are still to be determined.
The show is scheduled to take place at the Howe Sound Inn at 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, with no cover charge.
