Sing your heart out

Rock Bar Rock Star contest hits Chances starting tonight

Squamish's got talent and Darcy Cavanah wants to hear and see it.

Cavanah is organizing the Rock Bar Rock Star talent show at Squamish's Chances Casino. Starting Thursday (April 4), residents can sing their hearts out to qualify for the event. Qualifiers will run on Thursdays until the end of May, with the semifinals and finals taking place in June.

The event ran at the casino two years ago, Cavanah said. It drew a turnout of approximately 300 contestants. The winner was Susan Baker, who later sang on Mountain FM.

"It's a full-on production," Cavanah said. "We hired people to do lighting and the sound."

Up for grabs is $1,000 for the winner, $700 for the runnerup and $400 for the third-place contestant. It's a lot of fun, Cavanah said. The event gives people the chance to experience what it's like to perform on stage, he said, noting this year the contest finals will be on the casino's main stage.

"We just want to get as many singers out as we can," he said.

For more information on the contest visit www.chances.ca/locations/squamish. Contestants can also show up on the day of the event, which runs from 10 to 11 p.m.
