The game is afoot

Between Shift Theatre brings Holmes to the stage

Carla Fuhre wants to sit down and pick Sherlock Holmes's brain.

"He is quite fascinating," the Between Shifts Theatre actress and director said.

Fiercely smart and astutely logical, the fictional London-based detective will come to life in the production company's new play Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure.

The play has all the ingredients of a juicy mystery, said Fuhre, who is directing this production. There's the King of Bohemia, blackmail and a famous opera singer.

"This [story] is based at the end of Sherlock's career," Fuhre said. "It's also the first time there's a true love interest for Sherlock."

Fuhre wasn't immediately hooked on the script, written by Steven Dietz. With so many location changes, the set was minimal. But having run through the play and worked out how to portray the different scenes, Fuhre said she can't get enough of it.

"It's a real bromance, in a way," she added.

Sherlock and his trusted companion, Dr. Watson, find themselves facing Sherlock's long-time adversary, Professor Moriarty. It's a fast-pasted, dangerous and humorous affair, Fuhre said.

"Sherlock Holmes is so bright that he finds everyday life boring," she said, noting he only really comes alive when faced with a tangled, complex challenge.

The play consists of seven characters. Holmes is played by Darcey Kirkpatrick, who was Ebenezer Scrooge in Between Shifts Theatre's production of A Christmas Carol last year.

"I am really pleased with how rehearsals are going," Fuhre said. "It's nice to work with a small group again."

The curtain first rises on Thursday, Nov. 22, at the Eagle Eye Theatre. Two-for-one tickets will be sold on opening night. The play also runs on Friday, Nov. 23, and on Saturday, Nov. 24.

The next week it follows suit with performances on Thursday, Friday and Saturday (Nov. 29, Nov. 30 and Dec. 1). The curtain rises at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets cost $20 for adults and $15 for students and seniors. For more information or to purchase tickets online visit www.betweenshiftstheatre.com.
